Ahead of the expected launch of the Nokia 8 this week by HMD Global, a handset that may be more important to the long-term health of the Finnish start-up has leaked. The question now is if HMD will use this week’s launch to reveal the high-end handset, the low-end foot soldier, or bracket its existing portfolio with a double launch of the Nokia 8 and the Nokia 2.

A smartphone for only $5 per month can give your small business an affordable solution to bring your workforce together, which is what T-Mobile (NYSE:PCS) has done with the REVVL.

At only $125, the T-Mobile REVVL is a smartphone with features good enough to perform all basic communication, image capturing, conferencing, and storage functions.

Maybe because the leakers of the smartphone industry are so good at what they do, or maybe it's a testament to the hype cycle of the internet, but more and more phone companies have developed a habit of pre-announcing or "leaking" features/photos of their yet-to-be-unveiled device. Last week, LG announced yet another feature of its upcoming V30 (whose official unveiling is actually at the end of the month): the handset will have an aperture of f/1.6, the lowest ever in a smartphone.

Taking a look back at another week of news from Cupertino, this week’s Apple Loop includes an exclusive look at the iPhone 8 design and its biggest challenger, thoughts on the release date of Apple’s flagship smartphone for 2017, the MacBook Pro’s diminished role, iOS 10.3.3’s important security update, Apple streaming directly into your ear, and a lament for the iPod Shuffle.

The iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus aren't bad phones at all - in fact they're very good - but Samsung genuinely raised the bar with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus this year, with the shrunken bezels and overall design of the phones making Apple's efforts suddenly look rather dated (to be fair, the launches were five months apart).

Last year I wrote multiple pieces criticizing phones that everyone else in tech writing loved, namely the iPhone 7 Plus and Google Pixel. Huawei has been going this route for most of the last year already, positioning its phones as a high-priced premium item on par with Samsung and Apple, and it's a strategy that has payed off.

The Chinese smartphone industry may be the single most cut-throat and competitive industry in the world right now. There are -- no joke -- dozens and dozens of Chinese phonemakers, mostly based in Shenzhen, all churning out products on seemingly a monthly basis.

With the Nokia 3 handset now available to order in the UK (and the mid-range Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 to follow in August), HMD Global’s rollout of its Android-powered Nokia-branded smartphones continue. These handsets, especially the Nokia 3, are going to appeal to the low-priced high-functionality crowd that flocked to Nokia in previous smartphone generations, but many of the geekerati are waiting for the heavy-hitter, the big-cheese, the numero-uno, the specs-with-everything handset.

Nowadays nearly everyone uses a smartphone or tablet to browse the internet: some don’t even both using a desktop computer or laptop any more.

With people seeking to be more connected when on the go, smartphones are now an integral part of our everyday life.

Whether it's just because I'm bored with iOS and the iPhone, or just that I'm beginning to yearn for the flexibility and cutting-edge features of the latest Samsung and HTC handsets I'm not sure, but the iPhone's 10th anniversary could signal me saying goodbye to the Apple ecosystem - not raising a glass to another 10 years. The modern Android OS is, in terms of look and feel, undoubtedly related to iOS in a kind of spin-off way, as the many lawsuits between Apple and other smartphone brands will attest to.

Trickle down economics gets a bad press but there is one form of it that absolutely works, Apple's iPhone being a very good example of it. The usual description of trickle down is as an insult--let the rich keep more of their money and it will trickle down to us poor ones.

Those who stay tapped into what’s happening on the internet know well the name Mary Meeker. The reason for this slight increase might be that mobile users are more accustomed to using their devices for internet searches, as well as the prevalence of voice-recognition technology.
